Dr. Praveen Kumar is a young and energetic Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who is working with Institute of Neurosciences in Kolkata. His skill sets include CBT,Family Therapy, Psychopharmacology, Play Therapy,Training in Children, IQ Assessment, Autism Assessment, Dementia Management, De-addiction, Personality Disorder and Psycho-Oncology.

His education was completed from various parts of India. He went to MR Medical College in Gulbarga in Karnataka to complete his MBBS. His MD in Psychiatry was achieved from SCB Medical College in Bhubaneswar. 

He was exposed to intricacies of medical science while working with Christian Medical College in Vellore while completing Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He was an active part of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) unit. The focus of the CAP unit is to understand child psychopathology from a biological, developmental, socio-cultural and family systems perspective, and offer a comprehensive culturally appropriate management. The multidisciplinary team consists of consultant psychiatrists, clinical psychologist, special educators, psychiatric social worker and psychiatric nurses. It is actively involved in collaborating with NGO’s like Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity and Udhavum Ullangal in helping treat homeless mentally ill clients. Dr. Praveen Kumar was involved with an Inpatient, Outpatient, Consultation Liaison, handling emergency services, academic teaching and Psychotherapy. As a part of his fellowship curriculum, he was posted in various branches such as Paediatric Oncology, Paediatric Endocrinology, Paediatric Neurology, Developmental Paediatrics, Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine ,General Paediatrics and Community Paediatrics. He was an integral part of school mental health service team which had responsibilities of visiting schools in Vellore once in a month, train school teachers, school counsellors, and conduct workshops for them. It also involved counselling services to students in group and individual format and teach them life skill training. Working with CAP also provided Dr. Praveen Kumar an opportunity to interact with Nirmal Shishu Bhavan to assess children and manage behavioural problems associated with intellectual disability. Nirmal Shishu Bhavan is a home for physically and mentally challenged children. His team was also active in providing mental health services to child and adolescent population of Jawadi Hills which is a rural  area 20 kms from Vellore.
